The best cooperative board games for young kids

In a cooperative game, everyone plays on the same team against the game itself. Nobody is left out, nobody gloats, and when things go wrong the whole table groans together instead of one child melting down.

These are our favourite co-op games for preschoolers and early elementary kids. They’re all short, need little or no reading, and are fun for the adults playing too.

Tips

  • Let kids make their own choices even when you can see a better move. Co-op games are easy for one adult to "quarterback".
  • Talk through your thinking out loud on your turn. Kids learn strategy by hearing how you decide.
  • If you lose, ask "What could we try next time?" It turns a loss into a plan.
